Webster, MA – March 29, 2025 – The Webster Water Ski Collective is proud to announce that longtime member and boat driver, Dr. William (Bill) Michalson, has joined the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. This exciting development brings a new level of expertise and commitment to water safety to the shores of Webster Lake.
Dr. Michalson’s role in the Coast Guard Auxiliary includes teaching Safe Boating Courses and leading public education efforts aimed at increasing awareness and preparedness around boating safety, first aid, and water-based emergency response. His dedication to safety aligns perfectly with the Collective’s mission to provide a secure and inclusive environment for all water skiers, from beginners to Adaptive Ski participants.
“Adding the expertise and training of a Coast Guard Auxiliary member to one of our primary boat drivers is a huge asset to our community,” said Ryan DesRoches, Director of Adaptive Skiing at the Collective. “It reinforces our collective commitment to safety and education on the water.”
In addition to his instructor role, Bill is currently training to become a certified Vessel Examiner, which will allow him to conduct free vessel safety checks for boaters. These checks ensure that watercraft meet federal and state safety regulations—another way the Collective can extend its safety-first approach to the broader boating community.
A founding member of the Webster Water Ski Collective, Dr. Michalson is affectionately known among members as the “resident wizard.” With a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, he serves as a Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he teaches Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Robotics. He is also one of the architects behind WPI’s renowned Robotics program, instructing students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
On the water, Bill brings just as much expertise. He is a USA Water Ski certified Driver and is frequently seen pulling skiers at training sessions, practices, and especially during the Collective’s Adaptive Ski events, where his calm demeanor and technical precision make a world of difference.
As summer approaches, the Webster Water Ski Collective is thrilled to see one of its own take on such a meaningful national role, further blending education, engineering, and a love for water sports. Dr. Michalson’s involvement with the Coast Guard Auxiliary strengthens not only our own club, but the entire Webster Lake community.
